The Blackwater Castle property is exactly what its name suggests − a genuine castle. It is the perfect fit for travellers who prefer to feel nothing short of royalty.
Blackwater Castle is within a 5-minute walking distance from the village of Castletownroche, North Cork, a heritage village listed by Bord Failte as a “Tourist Town”. It sits on a 50-acre wooded estate and has its own private river flowing through the grounds.
The castle has every detail you would need in order to feel like a 15-century lady or lord. As you might have guessed, the Blackwater Castle is rich in history which goes back 10,000 years.
This magnificent castle was once the home of the former Viscount of Fermoy and Lords of the Barony of Fermoy, but its story goes way back to the Mesolithic period. The castle was built in the twelfth century as an extension of the fortress of Dun Cruadha, an in-land fort erected more than 2,500 years ago on the banks of River Awbeg.
For all history buffs, it’s worth mentioning that some of the most famous guests of honour of the Castle throughout the centuries were Early Mesolithic hunter-gatherers, Druids and Chieftains, Strongbow’s Men at Arms, Sir Walter Raleigh, and famously, the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. Even the notorious Oliver Cromwell and his army besieged the Castle.
Most recently, the Blackwater Castle was visited by the President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins, who described it as a “beautiful place” and set in “a majestic and pastoral environment”.
it sleeps up to 16 people in 9 bedrooms and has 6 reception rooms. The property is equipped with a fully stocked kitchen, a private bar and large fireplace, perfect for cosy, rainy evenings. The price is as grandiose as the Castle itself − € 3,000 per night.
The Blackwater Castle offers a real private getaway for travellers who want to escape from the busy city life. It offers a chance to go back in time to enjoy a more secluded, but romantic and lavish stay. But, if you desire to come back to 2018, you can always visit Castletownroche and stroll along the streets reminiscent of a late 19th/early 20th-century village.
